In this blog, Martin our CCO, highlights his journey with the successful introduction of OpenSmartMonitor to many businesses across the country focussing on his favourite feature which he terms ‘the port of eternal possibilities.
I have been successfully introducing businesses to our OpenSmartMonitor (or as us Devtankers call our product ‘OSM’) technology now for over two years.
The OpenSmartMonitor is a connected device, or as some call it an Industrial IoT (Internet of Things) device. Tim, our CEO, has always referred to it as the “Swiss Army Knife” of connected devices as it has so much functionality built in, with its ability to measure:
- Electrical current
- Ambient temperature and humidity
- Noise and light levels
- Air quality, specifically particulates at four different sizes, volatile organic compound and oxides of nitrogen indices and carbon dioxide concentrations
But my favourite feature is the auxiliary port on the side, the “Port of Endless Possibilities” because the range of additional parameters we can integrate are almost endless.
This port enables us to integrate other sensors and display data from them onto our standard Sustainable Business Intelligence (SBI) platform. The port can collect data from a range of sensor protocols:
- 1-Wire
- Can Bus
- RS232
- RS485 / Modbus
- 4 to 20mA Analogue
- Digital Inputs
To date we have quoted or integrated sensors to measure:
- Mass flow of diesel using a Coriolis effect sensor
- Bearing 2 axis vibration and temperature sensors
- External temperature probes
- Product present sensors
- Water and particulates in lubricant sensors (lubricant health)
- Low velocity air flow in general atmosphere sensors
- Water consumption meter
- Gas consumption meter
- Electrical supply power quality measurement
- Differential air pressure sensor in a clean room
- 0.5-micron particulate sensor in a clean room
- Water flow rate sensor
- Variable speed drive frequency set point
The range of parameters we can monitor, trend and alert on is almost endless and we have not been asked to monitor a parameter yet we cannot source a sensor for and integrate……that sounds like a challenge to me!

What do OpenSmartMonitor users say?
DPS Designs “Energy cost is a major hurdle for many companies, and we’re no exception. Utilising our OpenSmartMonitor solutions, we can closely monitor machine runtime and running costs, as well as overall efficiency and productivity. Insights from such data is enabling us to make relevant data-driven improvements to our manufacturing processes and machinery. ”
Ritchie Precision “Visualising the data from our manufacturing processes has opened our eyes to the opportunity we have to introduce efficiencies into each and every aspect of what we do. The more data we gather the better our insights will get.”
